2018/9/16托福独立写作范文：People nowadays are busy in work or school. They want to spend time on learning new things. Which one of the things will you choose to learn? 1. Learn a sport that you have never played before. 2. Learn to cook food that you haven’t prepared before. 3. Learn to make something by hand, such as clothing or jewelry. (18.09.16)
At present, in the wake of intense competition in workplace and school, people are exposed to a great deal of pressure and are more occupied than before. In order to relax, they tend to spend more time to learn new things. Some people prefer to learn to cook a new dish or to craft, while I’d like to try a new athletic challenge. My viewpoint is based on the following reasons and examples.
The first benefit that learning a new sport can bring is that during the learning process, people enjoy a greater chance to meet new friends. Unlike participating in sports you have already mastered, learning a new one requires blending in a different circle of people, which offers a good opportunity for us to make new friends and experience a different lifestyle. For instance, my friend David used to play football very often, but recently he spent his spare time learning to dive. As a beginner, he struggled to overcome water pressure. While through several practices with other experienced people, he finally mastered the skill and they became friends later. What’s more, he had a taste of the world of diving.
In addition, trying a new sport is conducive to people’s different part of bodies and different kind of abilities. Doing sports can be beneficial to people’s physical condition and various types of exercise have their own unique purpose. For instance, playing basketball could improve people’s hand-eye response ability and help build up arm muscles. What’s more, the University of Nottingham conducted a research that jumping exercise, such as rope skipping and shuttlecock kicking, could have an effect on preventing rarefaction of bone. Therefore, people engaging in a new sport could achieve positive results in improvement of fitness and ability.
Indeed, learning to cook a new dish and make things by hand could also offer pleasure and benefits as well. It is quite rewarding to receive other’s compliment when presenting the dish or craft you made. However, cooking and crafting cannot benefit the body and mind simultaneously like sports do.
To put in a nutshell, among these three options, I would choose to learn a new sport, for this is beneficial to both socializing and physical condition.
If I had the opportunity to learn a new skill and I had to choose between learning a new sport, learning to cook a new dish, or learning how to make handcrafted jewelry, I would choose to learn how to cook a new dish. All of those other options sound great too, but I think cooking a new dish would be more enjoyable and more useful.
To start with, sports aren’t a major passion of mine. I exercise regularly and I enjoy playing sports casually, but I’ve never really gotten into any sport that I’ve tried. For example, I played soccer with my high school last year, but I honestly only joined to hang out with my friends. Practice was fun, but I never cared if we won or lost a game. In fact, I was happy when the coach had me sit on the bench during a game because it meant I got to joke around with my friends. It seems being a professional athlete is not in my future.
As for the third option of crafting jewelry, it sounds really interesting but I don’t have much value for that in my life. I imagine it would be a skill I’d enjoy learning, but then I’d never use it again in my life. I’m not the kind of person that wears, or even cares for, jewelry. I suppose I could learn how to make it in order to give it as a gift or potentially even sell it for a profit, but I don’t think it’s worth the time.
In contrast to those other two options, learning to cook a new dish would be both enjoyable and practical. Fewer people today know how to cook than ever; we’re surrounded by fast food and delivery options. But is it better food? No, it’s just more convenient. Cooking will always be the best option for food because we can choose healthy ingredients and we can make the meal exactly the way we prefer it. I know how to cook some basic dishes, but taking a class or joining a cooking group would be a great experience. I’d learn skills that I could use throughout my whole life.
In short, they all sound like great options, but learning to cook a new dish would be the best option for me. It would be fun because I enjoy cooking, and it’d be practical because good food is an important part of life.
