2017年11月26日托福独立写作范文：In the past people ate food that was better for their health than they do today。这道题目重复了中国大陆考区2011年1月8日和北美考区2015年10月31日的题目
It is not uncommon that people nowadays easily suffer from diseases related to food quality. Compared with the relatively simple and natural food in the past, modern people are exposed to more choices including fast food, fried food and pickled food and thus they are more likely to choose some unhealthy food. Hence I agree to the statement that food in past are better for people’s health than food today.
On one hand, burdened with tighter schedule, modern people tend to eat outside more frequently instead of cooking by themselves. To improve the flavor and attract more customers, restaurants usually overuse oil, salt and other flavorings and exceed the consumption portion per day suggested by doctors. Consequently, as these flavorings are accumulated in people’s body, they are more likely to develop gastrointestinal diseases. What is worse, immoral businessmen use illegal cooking oil, chemicals and other pathogenic substance in their food products, leading to great threat to food safety. The news that melamine was found in the milk powder and more white collars are suffering from chronic gastritis both prove the worrying food quality at present. However, in the past, the economy was dominated by agriculture and people can be virtually self-sufficient. A diet mainly made up by coarse grains, vegetables and moderate meat significantly helps them maintain healthy and promote digestion. Therefore food in the past is more beneficial to people’s health.
On the other hand, less severe pollution also accounts for the healthier food in the past. With the development of modern society, more pollutants are emitted to soil, air and water, negatively influencing their quality. Farmers excessively use pesticides and fertilizer to the soil and crops, causing the food to contain poisonous elements. Industrial effluent is directly poured into the river. When livestock drinks it, the pollutants will finally enter the human body. Nevertheless, traditional methods applied in the industry and agriculture are environmentally friendly. It is more possible for a good environment to nourish healthier food. So from this perspective, it is also reasonable to believe that food in past are better for people’s health than food today.
In conclusion, several reasons have demonstrated that food in past are better for people’s health than food today. Although the advance of modern society is irreversible, food today can still benefit our health if we balance it carefully and pay more attention to reducing pollution.
