A lot of high school students now cheat in homework assignments, by asking other students for answers. Which of the following do you think is the most efficient way to stop?

-asking parents to help stop the students from cheating

-penalty or punishment to the students

-asking teacher to create homework assignment that cannot be easily cheated.

As a student myself, I am more than aware of the fact that a lot of high school students cheat on their assignments, either by doing their homework together as a group or by googling the answers themselves. How to resolve the matter of cheating is a difficult task for every educator out there. In my opinion, it is better to create an assignment that cannot be easily cheated than try to come up with a way to stop or punish those who do cheat.

First of all, we need to realize that there are countless ways of cheating, some of which are not easily detectable. Therefore, it would be impossible to ask parents for help. Also, penalties or punishments could be either too severe or too gentle for students to bear in mind. With that being said, the best way to prevent cheating is to design a task that simply cannot be cheated.

Such a task often requires a lot of imagination and innovation rather than repetition or recitation. For example, instead of asking the students to solve a maths problem step by step, we could ask them to create a practical question themselves by applying what they have learned in class. In that way, students are motivated to memorize what they have learned, and actively adapt the knowledge into real-life situation.

What’s more designing a task that cannot easily be cheated is less time-consuming and more effective than the other two options. Parents cooperation and penalties both take up a lot of energy and time both from the school’s side and the parents’ side. It is more demanding in that case. Whereas designing an assignment only requires some efforts from the teacher’s side and could be easily achieved.

In short, it is unrealistic to ban cheating by parents’ efforts or school’s punishments alone. The most effective way would be to stop the need for students to cheat at all. Of course, such an assignment could by no means easily designed, but it is a good start.
