Longer, more job-oriented graduate programs or shorter, more condensed ones have always been a tough question for juniors and seniors in college. Personally speaking, as an incoming senior student, I prefer a condensed program in that it could help save time for my future job.
For the majority of TOEFL exam takers who plan to further their studies abroad, tuition is always a big concern. it’s known to all that graduate studies are very expensive, therefore, a shorter program could save us a ton of money while at the same time offering us valuable knowledge and skills that could better prepare us for the job market. To be more specific, just browse a few school websites. Most programs are designed within one and a half years in hope that students could enter the society earlier and gain more experience outside school.
Also, it is undeniable that postgraduate studies for most seniors are a springboard before they officially enter the job market. Thus, what we are looking for in a graduate program is not necessarily how much we would broaden our horizons or how further could we research into certain subject matter, but practical skills and experiences. If you ask any HR personnel, chances are that they are going to tell you the no.1 skill they are looking for on your resume is not how much you have learnt at school, but your relevant job experiences. A shorter, more condensed program would definitely allow you more time than your fellows who enroll in a two or three-year program.
Of course, this is not to say that longer programs are not desirable at all. A longer program would definitely deepen your professional knowledge in the fields that your want to pursue later, and could be an excellent experience before your PhD application. But for most students who simply want to locate a job with a MS or MA degree, a more condensed program is no doubt more attractive.
