Teachers, the major part in education, play an important role in people’s life, as people need teachers to help them to become successful. People seek knowledge, skills and even advice for their own life from teachers all the time and thus some people believe that teachers are respected no matter whether it was in the past or now. It is because they claim that both people now and those in the past would need knowledge and skills to survive. However, from my perspective, teachers actually do not receive as much respect from students as before.
To begin with, the advance of technology has offered students more means to obtain information. In the past, before the invention of internet, teachers were the only source of information and knowledge. Whenever students had a problem, such as a difficult Math question, they didn’t have a choice but to ask teachers for help. Therefore, teachers were more valued. However, internet has changed the ways of obtaining information. People don’t need to leave home in order to search for answers to a question or get help for their trouble. All they need to do is to input the key word in the search engine and the answers will show up on the screen. Since teachers lose the position of the only source, they cannot be expected to receive equal respect.
Moreover, the development of economy has made people pay more attention to their enjoyment. 50 years ago, people barely had enough to eat and to dress. In order to change the world and improve their life, they tended to favor learning as much knowledge as possible. Thus, they were more motivated to learn and teachers who played an important role in education were more respected. Nonetheless, the development of economy has brought great wealth to average families and the improvement of material life has consumed people’s willingness to try hard to change the world and hence, to learn as well. It is common for students to hold the belief that they should enjoy their life as much as possible and studying hard is both energy-consuming and useless. Consequently, teachers, as a part of education, are also put on the shelf.
Furthermore, teachers are not considered to be as erudite as before. When students didn’t have the chance to get in contact with the outside world, they believed their teachers were the most knowledgeable people on earth, since the teachers could always find answers to all their questions. In contrast, students now can access more books in various fields, which enables them to ask much more difficult questions, questions far beyond the level of textbooks and possibly the knowledge base of teachers. As a result, teachers may find it hard to come up with an answer, which may disappoint students and leave the impression that teachers are not different from others. Then the respect students have for teachers will not be different from others and will be much less than that in the past.
Since teachers are not the only source of information anymore and are not considered to be as erudite as before and people start to pay more attention to their own enjoyment, teachers are not receiving as much respect as those in the past.
