When it comes to what makes up a good leader, people with divergent backgrounds and ages may have different answers. So there arises a heated debate about the issue whether the most important quality in choosing the leader of a school organization or club is honesty. From my perspective, the above statement is an exaggerated claim.
Admittedly, honesty is an important trait for a leader, because their integrity lays a solid foundation for earning trust and respect from others. In other words, honest people are those who can meet their commitment and thus are worth listening to. However, to regard honesty as the most significant virtue of a leader is a piece of overemphasis, for there are other equally important traits that make up an excellent leader.
First of all, when we think of what makes someone a great leader, one characteristic that comes to mind is decisiveness. We do not envision successful leaders standing around appearing unclear and uncertain. Instead, we view them as people who are able to quickly arrive at their decisions and communicate the goals to others. To be more specific, leaders of a school organization or club often have to make challenging decisions, such as whether to keep old members of the organization, reposition them or let them go and what extracurricular activities to hold with limited budget, and many other such challenges. Obviously, making good decisions in difficult situations is no small feat because these types of decisions involve change, uncertainty, anxiety, stress, and sometimes the unfavorable reactions of others.
Secondly, positivity, the ability to see the opportunity hiden in challenges, is one of the most important qualities a leader must possess. As is common sense, the process of leading a team will never be smooth, which means that various setbacks or troubles await the leader and his team along the road to achieve success. Obviously, the solution to all these troubles lies in the optimistic attitudes owned by a leader. Let me explain, the leaders’ attitude towards a problem are quite contagious and influential among the whole team. That is to say, if the leader has positive thinking in the face of bad situation, their members will also be motivated and inspired. Otherwise, the whole group is doomed to failure.
In a nutshell, in the process selecting a leader for a school organization, honesty cannot be regarded as the most essential quality, because there are other indispensable traits for a good leader such as positivity and decisiveness.
