2015年11月29日托福独立写作范文：Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: One quality that a successful leader must have is to make decision quickly; when a leader takes too much time to make decisions, he will be seen as ineffective to the people he lead.
One of the criteria to measure the level of leadership is to see the time a leader takes to determine what to do next. While some argue that efficient decision-making implicates outstanding nature of a leader, others might want to stay away from this kind of leaders. Considering various missions faced by diverse leaders, there are no sufficient reasons for all leaders to be decisive.
Before disproving the necessity, we must admit the significance for leaders to make decisions in limited time. A leader often serves as the main commander and guidance of a team, just like the function of our brains to our bodies; that means, leaders guide what inferior employees should do and thus determine the direction the team heads towards, if the team is coherent enough. Unless in very special situations, inferior workers do not have the power to make decisions, nor are they perceptive enough to make constructive decisions. Therefore, in the case where the leader does not make decisions in time, the whole team could hardly run, causing the time to achieve the goal to delay, and bringing potential reduction in profit. Furthermore, in some special cases, delay in decisions might result from the leader’s inertia, which would bring profound loss to the whole team. In conclusion, keeping timely decision-making is a valuable nature of leaders.
However, the variety of missions confronted by different leaders makes it impossible for all of them to be efficient as much as they can. There are some challenges, besides those requiring decisiveness, that need carefulness instead. As it does in the case of architecture, which requires engineers to be extremely careful when designing blueprints, since an error in sketches could give rise to local or even global failures in construction. What is more, for the same person, the level of carefulness and efficiency are often negatively correlated, which implies exceeding pursuit in efficiency may cause a decline in carefulness, accounting for potential losses. From the analysis above, the conclusion is different types of leaders need distinct properties to be successful; efficient decision-makers are highly welcomed in careers where there is considerable amount of work, but not those demanding exceptional meticulousness.
In short, even though being efficient in decision-making is beneficial in many cases, it is not qualified to be an indispensable property of all leaders. Whether or not a leader should make decisions quickly depends on the type of tasks he/she is working on.
Of all the skills that build a leader to greatsuccess, such as confidence, tenacity and keen insight, the ability to make wise decisionshas always been regarded as an indispensable quality. While there are circumstances inwhich the excellence is determined by how quickly the leader makes decisions, I do believethat for most of times, taking time to make decisions will not be seen as ineffective since goodjudgments always required deliberation and full-scale evaluation.
Indeed, in few cases a successful leader must make decisions quickly in response to theever- changing outside environment. Especially in the commercial industry, a top-notchleader ought to capture the most transient economic opportunities before its rivals in order todominate the market. For instance, the social media in China was not well developed fiveyears ago. My uncle, who was the CEO of a computer software company, keenly realized thegreat potentials of the development of social media and shifted the company's focus to thisarea before any other competitors. As a result, the first SNS network, developed by hiscompany, won tremendous success; his company now ranks top 10 in the nation.
However, the success of my uncle belongs to a few exceptions in commercial industry. Forthe majority of leaders, making decisions require careful weighting of the pros and cons; thus, it's plausible that it takes time to make up one's mind. Because most decisions have long-lasting and profound influence on the lives of others, making decisions quickly would considerhasty in most cases. At the end of the World War II, President Truman faced a dilemma – should the US drop the atomic bomb to force Japan to surrender? Being a successful leader, Truman did not settle on the issue rapidly; instead, he organized numerous meetings withhis consultants, asked the opinions of allied countries, and considered both the advantages andthe downsides of his decision back and forth for days. The dropping of the atomic bombs, though still controversial today, finally brought the bloody and destructive war to an end.
Furthermore, a considered leader should not jump to a conclusion to an issue becausedecisions oftentimes are accompanied with a heavy cost. If the decisions are made in a shortperiod of time, they mostly lack deliberation and ignore the high expenses of such action. Forexample, the implement of social welfare has been a slow process in the United StatesHistory. During President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration, it took him more than a year tofinally carry out the Great Society, a government program conducted by the federal governmentto provide aids for housing, food and medical care for people struggle on the poverty line. Thepresident realized the high cost of the social welfare and its pressure on the tax payers. Therefore, it took him a lot of time to weigh the true values of this program in comparison toits high price.
In brief, I do believe that despite few circumstances, a successful leader should take time tomake final decisions and should not be considered ineffective for such deliberation, forcareful judgments of the costs and effects are required.
