When people talk about virtues, honesty is definitely one factor mentioned in every situation, which in turn comes out that honesty becomes the most important criterion for everything. Here, I have to emphasize a truth that honesty is the essential character for being a good person, but it’s not the outstanding capability for being a leader or a successful man. Willing to stand out or being a leader, a person must be endowed with capabilities that others don’t have, such as confidence，cooperation. In my opinion, these characters are important and indispensable.
First, let’s talk about confidence. When people are called in to strive for a purpose, they need a leader. A leader who can build up morale in downturn, point out a new way in difficulties and prevail over all dissenting views. For all these things, the leader should win trust from members. Confidence is an essential factor to win others’ trust. Members in a students’ union are juniors, they are indistinct about goals and sometimes the working methods are not efficient. As a result, they are easier to be stranded and lose faith or patience, a confident leader can encourage all members and refill combativeness.
In addition, how to cooperate with other teammates is also worth considering. Cooperation is able to improve the efficiency when encountering difficulties. According to a survey conducted by Gallup, after polling hundreds of student from universities in California, a signify percentage of them regard that being cooperative in dealing with problems could get everybody involved when making decisions. During the discussion, suggestions from different members would make the problems comprehensively considered, and hence minimizing the chance to ignoring certain aspects. Meanwhile, letting everyone have an opportunity to express his opinion makes them feel a part of the team, which is essential to build team spirit.
All in all, there is no denying that honesty is the character required for being a good person. Whereas, to consider it as the most important character for a student leader is too absolute, other capabilities are more vital and essential.
It’s no doubt that we should consider the candidate’s honesty when we vote, but personally, I believe that there are other qualities to be taken into account.
First of all, a good leader should have excellent organization skills. As a leader of an organization, he has to be able to well-organize different activities to enrich the members’ life and influence the community. A leader cannot just sit there doing nothing. For example, chairmen of debating clubs must know how to organize a debate contest which includes many details to consider, such as where it would be held, how long it would last, whom should be invited as judges, what the reward would be and so on. These, indeed, are a lot of things that would definitely bother an ordinary guy. But as the chairmen, they have to handle these details properly and timely without any serious mistake. And that’s why excellent organization skills matter.
Besides, communication skills are also of great significance for an organization leader. Leaders who couldn’t communicate well wouldn’t get their ideas across and win the community’s support. Either of the two situations would be a disaster for the leaders when they are organizing a certain activity. When in my college, I was the chairman of our school’s Youth sing club. At that time, we were going to hold a sing show to celebrate the Christmas. Everything went well except my failing to get permission of using the auditorium. I found the administrator who was a serious man, hard to communicate. When I asked for the auditorium, he just told me that the auditorium had been arranged to another speech club already that day directly. Then I went back very frustrated, and told my member Austin what had happened. However, he didn’t give up going to see the administrator and learned that the speech club would be using the auditorium in the afternoon while our show was at night. Finally, we were able to hold the show on time thanks to his communication skills.
Granted, honesty is very important for a leader. If leaders are not honest, they wouldn’t win the members’ trust and support. Without the members’ support, they can’t do anything.
In conclusion, honesty is important, but it is not the most important one to consider when we vote. To be a successful leader, he has to have a number of qualities, such as organization and communication skills besides honesty.
