2014年10月18日托福独立写作题目：Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People should know about events happening around the world even if they have little influence on their daily lives.
We are living in an ever-changing world nowadays, with events happening everywhere. Many people are occupied with their own business and thereby choose to turn a deaf ear to the events which have, by their words, little influence on their daily lives. However, it doesn't seem sensible to ignore all these so-called irrelevant events. What we should value is actually the informative events and that's why we name our age as the Information Age.
No one can deny the fact that life is not only composed of daily routines, but leisure moments as well. Beside work, we also pursue for relaxations, yet we will have few choices if we solely focus on trifles around us. Taking sports for example, most people have their favorite sports team. When it comes to the latest game of the team, we will anxiously wait in front of the television, watching their performance with excitement, cheering or crying over the final result, and heatedly discussing about the game afterwards. Likewise, many other events such as political affairs or entertaining news involved with famous stars may also arouse people's interest. We find pleasure in these events though they have little to do with our own daily lives. Undoubtedly, knowing about current events can make us updated as well as engage us in conversations with other people.
Not only do global events trigger animated discussions, the knowledge can also lead us to better decisions if we can grasp the information behind them. In other words, many events don't seem to be influential on our daily life at first sight, which is true to some extent, but in the long run, quite a few will play an important role. World events like the political situations in Middle East usually don’t concern many people. However, political unrest and the most recent social movements there may indirectly affect oil prices. The global market largely depends on oil from the Middle East. If oil companies or even other business concerned with oil make predictions and decisions reasonably, they could make a fortune from these events.
Admittedly, it is not advisable to be mindful of everything that is happening in the world because we do not have so much energy and time. However, the importance of information can never be overestimated. We need to adopt time fragments to learn about what is happening around us even though it does not have affected our daily lives at this moment.
There is no denying that the world is getting smaller every day. The globalization of the economy has made people and nations more closely connected and more dependent than ever before. People should keep up with global current affairs because whether people can see it or not, these events impact our lives more than we realize.
Take for example the political situation in places like the Middle East. Political unrest and the most recent social movements in this region may not directly affect our daily lives, but this indirectly affects oil prices. The global market largely depends on oil from the Middle East. The unrest creates disorganization, leading to disruption in the production of oil. This affects global oil prices which then impacts every other facet of industry and economy. The price of everything, such as farm produce, is affected by this seemingly localized instability.
Another example of a local issue that has global impact is labor movements. Most recently protests from workers at Foxconn factories have created a rippling effect on the global economy. Decisions made at Foxconn and other Apple Company suppliers can affect the Chinese and global standards of labor and production. Of course as a native of China I think these changes are significant, but no one, from China or any other country, will deny that they have a direct impact on international business and labor organization.
Finally the development of global industry has had a significant impact on the environment. Local issues of industry affecting the local environment also have a global impact. This is not just limited to industries, but also many economic and social sectors that have affected the environment. For example the desertification of areas in Mongolia and Northern China have created huge dust storm do not only affect weather in China. The dust from these storms travels across the Pacific Ocean to North America by means of high atmospheric winds. This dust then lands on the snowcapped peaks of the North American mountains, making the snow darker and more easily heated by the sun. Consequently, this premature melting of the icecaps leads to severe weather locally and globally.
It is important for people to know about global current events because however small the event, it inevitably has a global impact. If people want to understand what is going on locally, they need to think globally.
