2019年10月12日下午托福独立写作题目:Is it beneficial to stop reading or listening to news for a period of few days or weeks?本次托福考试又是上午场和下午场。天道智思托福培训班第一时间为大家送上托福独立写作范文。具体如下:
As a student journalist for over seven years, I cannot leave news in my life. And I don't believe the benefits will outweigh the disadvantages if we stop watching news for a period of time.
Firstly, keeping track of the latest news is essential in staying aware of what is happening around us. This is extremely important when it comes to some dangerous events. Last month, for example, the news reported that there would a huge typhoon coming and reminded us not to go outside in the following days. In this case, if I didn't get the reminder because I intentionally forced myself not to watch the news, I might just walk directly into the wind and might face great danger. In addition, watching the latest news is also important in knowing where I can go and where I cannot recently. Take Hong Kong for example. The prolonged protests and riots on the streets pose great dangers for visitors and especially visitors from mainland China. However, if I do not even know this news, I might just fly to Hong Kong as usual as I did every summer in the past. Moreover, since I always try my best to help the people in need — either through donating or fund raising in school — I have to stay aware of the latest news to figure out where and who needs help most at the moment. If I lose track of the news for a long time, I might fail to offer help to lots of people suffering from natural disasters and sudden warfare, and I would feel guilty about that.
Secondly, watching news often brings me unexpected fun and surprise. I'm a huge sports fan, but nowadays am already too busy to watch a full set of game. Last week, for example, I was totally unexpected in seeing China win the champion in the World Women Volleyball Championship on the news. I watched the highlight of the match and almost burst into tears at once. The excitement overwhelmed me and that would never be the case if I didn’t watch the news. Moments like this are countless — from the legalization of homosexual marriage in Taiwan to Li Na's winning the Australian Open to Beijing's winning the bid for 2022 Olympics, I feel great excitement when I find these surprises in news, and the happiness is furthered because I didn't expect it. On the other hand, if I didn't check news during those time periods, I would lose these lights in life and moments of delight.
Admittedly, I also have thought of escaping from news for some time. I was annoyed seeing all kinds of political and social biases on media reports _ US media puts focus on Trump all day long but seldom pay any attention to the warfare in western Africa; Chinese media hardly touches upon any issue of LGBTQ+. However, I also know that these biases are inevitable given our political environment and social stereotypes, and therefore should not be completely the media's fault. Despite these media biases, the contribution of news to my life is undeniable. And it is so convenient that I just need to turn the TV on while having dinner and then I can obtain all kinds of reminders and happiness.
In conclusion, I still believe that I would always check the news on time. Although news may be partial and biased under social influence, it lets me stay aware of the people around and the world, gives me important reminders and brings me unexpected pleasure. These benefits greatly outweigh its possible problems, and that's why I will never refuse news in my life.
