本篇问第二篇，2014/3/22托福独立写作范文：Young school children should be required to study art and music in addition to math language science and history
The importance of standardized testing in today’s society has caused us to place an undue emphasis on the core subjects of math, language, science, and history. Arts education often falls by the wayside. But exploring art and music are just as important for a child’s development as studying the main subjects.
For one thing, studying art and music encourages creative thinking. The key is in balancing structured learning with unstructured periods of exploration. Students can be taught certain skills that allow them to express themselves more clearly, and then be given free rein to express whatever they want. Unconventional associations can be encouraged so that students are able to come up with novel and interesting ideas. These sort of activities will accustom students to flexible and inventive ways of thinking, so that when they eventually begin working in the real world, they can make unique contributions to society.
For another thing, arts education aids in healthy emotional development. Art and music provide non-threatening means for children to express their thoughts and feelings. For this reason, researchers are currently experimenting with art and music for therapeutic purposes. Initial studies show that art therapy is hugely effective for addressing emotional issues. I know that at least in my own life, art has helped me greatly. When I was younger, I was skinny and weak. This made me a prime target for bullying. But when I drew, I drew myself as a superhero, and this process of reimagining myself gave me the strength to endure the bullying and eventually stand up for myself.
Finally, a strong engagement with art and music will help students develop a firm appreciation of beauty, and this will make them conscientious people more likely to make the world a better place. This is not to say that a subject like math cannot contain beauty, but beauty is experienced much more frequently and directly in the arts. This direct exposure will make you more likely to, say, appreciate the beauty of a forest or an alternate way of life, and recognize the importance of protecting these things from destruction.
It’s a shame that arts education doesn’t get the attention it deserves, because its benefits are both numerous and immense. It not only breeds creativity, but also helps us lead healthier emotional lives and become more conscientious people. We would do well to incorporate art and music into our children’s education.
Evidently, the grade school education, which is very important to children, aging from five to ten, is attracting more and more attention from the entire society. Some believe that, besides math, science, history and language, the young student should be required to study are and music, while others don't.I am among those in favor of that requirement for sevaral reasons.
Fisr of all, education of art and music help foster children, at age five to ten, ability of appreciation. Access to art and music, enable those talented children to establish thier primary interest, which is very important to thier further development. A friend of mine, Jack, who is now a famous pianist for example, is very grateful to his early musical illumination, which brought him a brand new music world, when he was in elementary school. Meanwhile, to ordinary people like me, early education of art and music is also supposed to be valued, which provides us abundant topics to share.
Furthermore, art and music studying can set the children free from the stressful study of other subjects, such as math, science, language, ect.. In present-day society, students are pushed to get a decent score by parents or themselves. Surrouned by art and music, young students can leave the unpleasant stress behind. Statistics, conducted by a famous educational organization, shows that young child, who have one or two hobbies related to art and music, performs better in traditional subjects than that who don't. Also, art and music education contributs to abstract thinking.
In addtion to boost to capability of appreciation, benefits to other subjects education, let the children learn about culture and history, through a vivid anvenue. By being exposed to master pieces of art and music, children can understand the culture and history behind them more directly and cocretely. For example, by seeing Michelangelo's famouse sculpture, David, chilren probibly have a better understanding of the spirit of Renaissance. By listening fate symphony of Beethoven, children can feel his strugle with fate. There is no better way for children to understand culture and history that vividly.
To sum up, with all the advantages above, in no way can we deny the requirement of are and music education.
