Do you like to eat sweets?
Yeah I do. There are loads of different varieties of sweets and candies on the market, and mostly I like chewy fruity sweets. Sometimes I eat chocolates too. However, it’s not good to eat too many sweets because they are not only bad for your teeth, but not good for your health in general. And, also eating a lot of sugar makes you put on weight, which I don’t really want to do.
Do you like sweets more or less now compared with when you were child?
Actually, I liked sweets more when I was a child than now. I am not sure why children love to eat sweet things, but they usually do. The older I get the less I seem to enjoy sweets or cakes or anything like this.
Have you ever tried to make sweets?
I have never tried to make sweets no. I’ve never really even thought about it. But I have made cakes on a number of occasions. I’ve baked small cup cakes, large birthday cakes and some French style pastries. But never sweets or candies.
Why do people like sweets?
People enjoy sweet things for a number of reasons. Firstly, sugar gives you energy, and when you eat sugar it quickly gets into your blood stream and makes you feel good. It has a chemical reaction in our brains and makes us feel happier, more energetic and enthusiastic. You might not notice the effects all of the time, but this is what happens when you eat sweet things. Secondly, people are very attracted to the way sweets look – often they are made to look pretty, delicate, or fun and amusing and cute. So, these are the two main reasons why many people like sweets.
Do you like cakes?
I love cakes, yes. When I was a child we didn’t see many cakes here in my city, in China, but over the past ten years or so lots of different types of cakes seem to be popular, from the French style pastries, to the more American style desserts. I think in general, though, Chinese people don’t like cakes as much as westerners – but we do have the habit of giving really nice birthday cakes to people on their birthday dinners – that’s a tradition which we do really enjoy.
Do you eat cakes or sweets after the meal?
I actually don’t usually eat cakes or sweets after a meal. But I have a few friends that like to. In fact, they often eat in Thai restaurants, and I’ve seen that after a meal in those restaurants they often order some kind of sweet rice cakes or coconut desserts. I know that in Europe and the USA many people like to eat a cheesecake or some form of sweet dessert after a meal, especially after a special meal like a Sunday dinner or a nice restaurant meal. I don’t really have this habit, though.
Is there any sweet food in your country?
Yes, there’s lots of sweet food. China is a pretty big country and some regions are famous for sweeter dishes – Guanghzou and Shanghai for example, are places that are noted for having sweeter sauces on in their dishes than most of the northern regions. Every region also has some kind of sweet speciality, too. Even though China is not exactly famous for its sweets and desserts, when I think about it, there are actually a lot of different types of sweet foods available.
