How I Prepared for GRE

I prepared for ~ 1 month for the GRE and spent about 1 hour per day preparing. I think the key is to figure out how many study days you have before your exam and routinize studying every day as opposed to cramming material within a few days. For me, I prefer studying an hour every day for 10 days as opposed to studying 10 hours on one day.

Before I started preparing, I did a mock exam to see where I need to put in the most work. I realized that I didn’t have to prepare for the quantitative section, as the concepts were simple, and I was already familiar with the terminology. I also didn’t really prepare for the writing section. I watched a few videos on YouTube on the day before the exam to familiarize myself with the format of the essays and how to structure it. One of the things I realized was there are key terms and phrases you can use to signal your understanding to the grader (e.g. “The author concludes ABC using XYZ as evidence” demonstrates that you know what the purpose of the author’s writing is, and their argumentative structure). I think having a fast typing speed is an advantage for the essay section, because it gives you more time to plan.

The parts I prepared for were vocabulary and reading. For vocabulary, I went through two lists of vocabulary from GRE 3000 every day and recorded terms I didn’t know on Quizlet, which is an app that lets me review terms in small windows such as when I’m waiting for the bus. At the same time, I did 5 sections of GRE 1200 everyday, so about 50 practice problems. It’s key to become familiar with the question format. Additionally, I read one passage everyday with no timing pressure, with the goal of full comprehension – my objective was to target the questions I get wrong even when I fully understand the passage to understand why and start to think using the test-maker’s logic. Personally, the fill-in-the-blanks didn’t take me that long, so my approach on the test is I do all the fill-in-the-blank first, and then do the reading afterwards when I know I have a lot of time.

I think the real determinant to how long it takes someone to prepare for the GRE is their vocabulary level and critical reading level. If your vocabulary and reading comprehension are strong, you can probably prepare for the GRE within 3 months from knowing nothing to get the score you want. If your vocabulary level is not as strong, then you should budget more time to memorize words.

2, GRE跟其他标化考试的关系

我觉得这个考试是比SAT简单的一个考试。如果你考大学的时候考过SAT,并且取得了不错的分数,那对GRE的准备绝对是一个利好消息。

GRE vs. Another Standardized Test

I think this exam was easier than SAT. If you prepare for the SAT, it builds a good foundation for preparing for GRE.

3, 准备GRE的其他方法

对于我自己来讲,持续不断大量的阅读经济类和新闻类的素材对于提高批判性阅读能力的帮助非常大。每天早上我都会去读华尔街日报,并且兼职处理学校俱乐部的财务工作。当你读到关于类似于半导体这样复杂行业公司的相关文章时,就要好好钻研扩展一番,可以学习到相关行业的专业知识,如果在GRE碰到相关文章就比较容易读懂了。

Indirect Ways that Helped Me Prepare

One thing that I think helped my critical reading is having to constantly read financial filings and journalism. I read Wall Street Journal every morning and also read financial filings for a part-time job and for an investment club at school. Sometimes when you’re reading about a company in a complex industry such as semiconductors, you have to learn about how that industry works so the reading is often technical as well, which is comparable to GRE reading passages.

4, GRE最困难的部分

个人认为,对于大部分考生来讲,GRE最难的部分是词汇,以及怎么做好时间规划。

短期准备:建议先熟悉出题形式和制定适合你的考试策略,(我的考试策略是先做填空部分,在做阅读部分的时候先看题在读文章)

长期准备:如果有很多的时间,我建议重点放在扩充词汇量和提高阅读理解能力。

Difficult parts of GRE

I think the most challenging part of GRE for most people is the vocabulary and knowing how to budget your time.

Short-term preparation: recommend familiarizing yourself with the format of questions and test taking strategies that work for you (for me, it means doing all the fill-in-the-blank first in the verbal section, and reading questions before I read the critical reading passage)

Long-term preparation: if you have a lot of time, I would focus on vocabulary and reading comprehension.
