众所周知,GRE阅读文章的逻辑性极强。因此,同学们需要在平时多训练此方面的能力。一般来说,文章中的逻辑走向 般是借助信号词(signal words)来体现的。英文中的信号词主要有以下几类,请特别注意例子中标有下画线的部分。

1. 增补类(Addition Transitions)

举例说明:

In the first place, no "burning" in the sense of combustion, as in the burning of wood, occurs in a volcano; moreover, volcanoes are not necessarily mountains; furthermore, the activity takes place not always at the summit but more commonly on the sides or flanks; and fmally, the "smoke" is not smoke but condensed steam.

2. 因果关系(Cause-Effect Transitions)

举例说明:

The ideologue is often brilliant. Consequently some of us distrust brilliance when we should distrust the ideologue.

3. 比较关系(Comparison Transitions)

举例说明:

When you start with a portrait and search for a pure form, a clear volume, through successive eliminations, you arrive inevitably at the egg. Likewise, starting with the egg and following the same process in reverse, one finishes with the portrait.

4. 对比关系(Contrast Transitions)

举例说明:

Every American, to the last man, lays claim to a "sense" of humor and guards it as his most significant spiritual trait, yet rejects humor as a contaminating element wherever found. America is a nation of co血cs and comedians; nevertheless, humor has no stature and is accepted only after the death of the perpetrator.

5. 结论类(Conclusion and Smnmary Transitions)

举例说明:

Reporters are not paid to operate in retrospect. Because when news begins to solidify into current events and finally harden into history, it is the stories we didn't write, the questions we didn't ask that prove far, far more damaging than the ones we did.

6. 举例类(Example Transitions)

举例说明:

With all the ingenuity involved in hiding delicacies on the body, this process automatically excludes certain foods. For example, a turkey sandwich is welcome, but the cumbersome cantaloupe is not.

7. 地点类(Place Transitions)

举例说明:

What did it matter where you lay once you were dead? In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on top of a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you were not bothered by things like that.

8. 复述类(Restatement Transitions)

举例说明:

Under these conditions the electron and positron are not a result of vacuum fluctuations but are real particles, which exist indefinitely and can be detected. In other words, under these conditions the vacuum is an unstable state and can decay into a state of lower energy; i.e., one in which real particles are created.

9. 时间过渡类(Time Transitions)

举例说明:

At fast a toy, 但!! a mode of transportation for the rich, the automobile was designed as man's mechanical servant. Later it became part of the pattern of living.

以上便是英语中常见的信号词。同学们切不可大意哦!
